Megan & Pita Alatini's Marriage Woes

Megan Alatini, Jonny Williams

Another Dancing with the Stars relationship is in trouble.

In 2005, the romance between and Nerida Jantti (then going by the name Nerida Lister), saw them both break up with their partners (although they deny any hanky panky during DWTS).

More recently Cory Hutchings’ marriage was in trouble after rumours that Cory and partner Rebecca Nicholson did the horizontal mambo.

Now, Megan Alatini is admitting that her marriage to rugby player Pita is on the rocks. She’s packing her bags to head to Japan where hubby and children Trey and Tiara are eagerly waiting for Megan and daughter Tonica to join them.

The problem? The couple who have been together for 15 years admit they never see each other and have been quarrelling while they live in different countries. Is this the same couple that twittered about their happy marriage less than a year ago and shared their bedroom secrets with the gossip mags?

Megan Alatini, Jonny WilliamsMegan (or Megz as she likes to be known) says rumours that she had a fling with Dancing With The Stars partner Jonny Williams didn’t help. That’s an odd thing to say, given she started the rumours when she told the gossip mags that she thought Jonny was sexy and she found him attractive!

It was easy to feel an emotional attachment with Jonny – we had a beautiful connection.
Then she trots out the ‘we’ll be friends forever’ line. Doesn’t every DWTS couple say that?

Of course, in the case of Megan and Jonny that might be difficult. During the video footage of DWTS, Jonny was seen socialising with Megan and Pita, who was unaware of rumours at that time. Would he still be so welcoming? And how did he not notice that Jonny and Megz were smitten with each other?

Megan was seen leaving Jonny’s hotel room early in the morning during their stint on DWTS, and hotel staff say they were spending time together right up until the night of the final.

We hear it was a bit of a revolving door, with Jonny’s ex girlfriend Kirsty being ushered into the room on the nights that she travelled to Wellington to watch him dance. Their relationship of five years hit the skids during DWTS and Jonny is now dating Kristie.

Jonny dances professionally with Rebecca Nicholson. They are the current New Zealand New Vogue champs.

Nubian Angelz

Megz missed out on a television presenting role here in New Zealand but is still actively working on promoting her music career. She performs with her sisters Monique and Meryl aka Nubian Angelz and hopes to put out an album. The group recently toured NZ as part of the Variety tour and played at SkyCity. Nubian Angelz describe themselves as RnB Pop-Senation Music Group. Let’s hope Megz' singing is better than her spelling.

By the way does anyone else notice the family trait of naming all the children with the same first name? Megan’s siblings are Meryl, Monique and Miquelle. Her children all have names starting with T – Tonica, Trey and Tiara.

Miriama Smith & Jonny Williams Lovers?

Jonny Williams, Miriama SmithWoman's Day, 17 March 2008
Dancing with the Stars contestant Miriama Smith was spotted doing an altogether different rhumba with her dance partner Jonny Williams.

This week’s Woman’s Day (which also includes a story on Golden Balls Beckham playing away with a mystery woman) has photos of Miriama and Jonny cuddling and holding hands at the beach while sipping wine. Looks like Dancing With The Stars has performed its magic again with yet another pairing hooking up off the dance floor.

Miriama (31) is six years older than Jonny and as we reported earlier both are footloose and fancy free.

Jonny Williams, Miriama Smith

Does anyone remember their video interview before last week's Rhumba? At the time we commented that it was strange for them to acknowledge the rumours so openly. Now, we see why!

JW: Miriama’s great. we get on really, really well. Everything’s cool. So…

JW: Hello. How’s it going?

MS: Great.

JW: Good.

JW: Bit late today.

MS: Yeah. Sorry.

JW: Is the traffic bad?

MS: No. No. something just came up.

JW: Okay. Is everything okay?

MS: Not really, no. I can’t with you any more Jonny. I think I’m falling for you.

JW: Well you wouldn’t be the first one, babe.

In the last series, Megan Alatini confessed that she had the hots for Jonny and rumours were flying that the two were enjoying a horizontal rhumba or two while sequestered in Wellington. Jonny had a girlfriend at the time, but the gossipers say that she was soon moved aside. One source told us that Jonny and Megan were seen sneaking out of a hotel room very early on the morning of the final of last year's Dancing with the Stars. Perhaps, they were getting in some early err dance practise!

It puts the comments in a new light, doesn't it?

Hubby Pita Alatina clearly heard the same rumours as he was spotted in the audience glowering at the pair. They later attempted damage control, giving a media interview where they talked about the secrets of their marriage and pawed each other for the benefit of the journalist.

Update: Jonny denies romance

Jonny Williams Dancing Success

Jonny Williams, who partnered Angela Bloomfield and Megan Alatini in Dancing with the Stars was profiled on a recent episode of TV3 and Maori Television's youth program, Tu Te Puehu.

Competitive Jonny says he loves performing and winning dancing competitions, but his proudest moment was making it to the final of Dancing With The Stars during 2007. Bet it didn’t hurt that dance partner Megan Alatini told the gossip mags that she had a “secret crush” on spunky young Jonny. And if one commenter can be believed, things may have gone further between the pair.

Jonny’s philosophy is to listen, focus, train hard and enjoy. Sounds like a winning combination and could explain his success in the New Zealand National Latin Champs. His ultimate goal is to train future New Zealand champions, just as his teacher Donna Dawson, a former DWTS judge, trained him for success.

Dance teacher Jonny recently made his way onto David Hartnell's Best & Worst Dressed List for 2007.

Tu Te Puehu is a sports programme aimed at inspiring youth into making healthy lifestyle decisions by role modeling top NZ athletes. The current series is played on TV3, Sunday mornings and replayed on Maori Television, Saturday evenings. Previous series have profiled the likes of Michael Campbell, Benji Marshall, Ben Fouhy, Marty Roestenberg, Jossi Wells, Brent Newdick and Shane Cameron. Tu Te Puehu is presented in both Maori and English.

Megan Alatini and Sisters Sing Again

Monique, Meryl, Megan Nubian AngelZ
Dancing With The Stars
runner up and NZ Idol judge Megan Alatini and sisters Meryl and Monique Cassie have reformed their girl band Nubian AngelZ and plan to foot the bill to release a single.

The sisters are hoping their popularity in the television series The Tribe will provide a launching pad for CD sales. From season two Meryl Cassie, who played the part of Ebony on The Tribe sang the theme song The Dream Must Stay Alive, which performed well in UK charts.

The trio are also performing at corporate gigs and think there is a market for a girl band in New Zealand. With outfits like those and young toned bodies, there's definitely a market, but will it be for their singing?

DWTS Gossip 25 July 07

Dancing with the Stars judge, Brendan Cole, is romancing a doctor!
According to The People, Alex is a skin specialist who is enjoying public displays of affection with our Brendan Cole in London night spots.

How much is a celeb worth?
Recently we posted about celebs offering their services to help Auckland City Mission fundraising efforts. The hot ticket was Aja Rock, but Hayley Holt and others have also raised substantial sums for charity. Good on them!

  • Hayley Holt 1-2 hour Snowboarding lesson sold for $600
  • Rebecca Nicholson 1 hour dancing lesson sold for $320
  • Aja Rock, Treasure Island contender, flight to Waiheke and lunch sold for $1,500
We're still waiting for the promised auction from Joe Cotton which we haven't seen yet on the listings.

Megan's ache for the homeless
In this week's NZ Woman's Weekly, Megan Alatini talks about the Auckland City Mission auctions and the heartache she feels for homeless people, promising a night of glitz and glamour if you bid to go out to dinner and dancing with her and DWTS partner Jonny Williams. Miss Prozac can't help thinking that would sound more sincere if it was the homeless people that she was taking out to dinner...

TrueBliss Retrospective

A flashback to TrueBliss

In this video the girls from TrueBliss squabble over shoes while Peter Urlich looks on helplessly.

Their single, Number One

Peter Urlich introduces this clip as the band start rehearsals. It's a pretty uninspiring song, but wow, Joe Cotton has lost a lot of weight since this video.

This week's DWTS Gossip

Brendan Cole and Camilla DallerupBrendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup

Brendan Cole would like to have a nose op!
Brendan Cole swears he's really a nice lad. He says he's had his heart broken by women, and maybe broken a heart or two along the way but he promises he's never cheated on a woman and that he wanted his ex (dancing and romantic partner) Camilla Dallerup to keep the diamond engagement ring he bought for her. What a guy!

Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup

Despite his many affairs of the heart and loins he reckons he hasn't told any women he loves them for many years (unless you count his Mum). Turns out the poor lad is self conscious about his nasally voice and would consider getting a nose job. Nice guy Brendan also supports the Bubble Foundation.

Hayley Holt doesn't know her All Blacks
How celebrities get a date: When All Black captain Richie McCaw asked Holt's agent if Hayley Holt would like to go to the premiere of Oceans 13 on Wednesday night with him, Hayley said she had no idea who he was! We're still waiting to hear whether she accepted or declined the date...

In other news Hayley is one of the coaches at Snow Girls, A new extended programme of residential female-specific snowboard and ski camps at Snow Park NZ.

Why Megan Alatini supports Youthline
You have to wonder what's wrong with the Megan Alatini publicity machine that we only find out after DWTS has ended that her chosen Dancing with the Stars charity, Youthline, was chosen after she lost a cousin to youth suicide. Now that sort of news could have won her support from text voters, but instead some bright spark in publicity chose to promote Megan wearing fringed bikinis, lusting after her much younger and happily in love dance partner Jonny Williams, and pawing her hubby in the middle of photo shoots. In the end she came across as trashy, cheap and desperate.

The news that Megan has a personal interest in Youthline and the tragedy that prompted her interest in the charity could have altered viewers' perceptions. Instead we were given the plucky older Suzanne battling injury and past tragedy against the cheap trashy upstart in skimpy clothes. Is it any wonder that Suzanne Paul won the vote?

I suggest Megan sacks her agent and gets someone who knows how to brand and position her to wide appeal. Fellow TrueBliss member Keri Harper insists that Megan is a fun and sweet person. However, there was nothing to suggest this in her publicity. Instead she was portrayed as smug, over-confident and sexy. I'm not saying sexy is bad - but there's trashy sexy and classy sexy. Suzanne had the classy sexy sewn up with her leggy dancing display.

April's cancer link
April Ieremia's mum has been battling breast cancer for several years leading April to choose the Breast Cancer Foundation as her chosen charity for DWTS.

Suzanne celebrates with an early night
After her Dancing with the Stars win and celebrated by heading to bed early with a hot water bottle and a cup of tea. She has put forward two ideas for television shows staring her fine self and is waiting to hear back. Our advice to TVNZ - get Hayley Holt to front your next television show. Right now she's the hottest thing in lycra.

Candy Lane's column
There was nothing from Candy Lane this week. Perhaps she stepped on a few too many toes last week when she revealed that one DWTS celeb has to fortify themselves with a drinkie or two before the show and two sets of couples are rumoured to be doing the horizontal Rhumba.

Elimination Interview with Keri Harper

I spent a few minutes on the phone this morning with the bubbly Keri Harper after her elimination from Pop's Ultimate Star. Keri’s looking on the bright side after her early departure from the show and feels that it has been a great experience for her. I really enjoyed my chat with Keri. She’s intelligent, articulate and ‘real’

Keri Harper & Emily Williams Elimination

How did you feel after the elimination?

It took a lot of pressure off me. While it was disappointing it also frees me up to plan my wedding (the big day is on 15th December) and catch up with my family. It’s been hard to learn a new song every week as well as work full-time as part of a graphic design team.

What did you do after the show?

I went out with Joe Cotton and shared a bottle of wine.

Will the best singer win Pop’s Ultimate Star?

It was obvious that Emily Williams and I were less well known to viewers and so we got less votes so popularity is definitely going to be a big part of it. Guys like Ben and Steve who are popular with young girls should do well as young girls text a lot of votes.

Do you get nervous performing?

Definitely. I thought I sang ‘Don’t Speak’ better second time round because the pressure was off and I could just relax. I love singing with my covers band because there’s less pressure and less scrutiny. We have a lot of fun and you can interpret and sing in your own style, and it’s not a big deal if you make a mistake. It was a great experience for me but I don’t think I’d do it again. Live television is a lot of pressure. I’m glad I did it but now I can get on to planning my wedding.

Abbalicious

I read you’re in Abbalicious. Do you wear those groovy satin outfits?

Abbalicious is heaps of fun, very cheesy. I’ve been doing the show with Jackie Clarke for years. We wear the blue caps with white tops, and Jackie wears a bad wig. It’s all choreographed and huge fun.

Watch a video of Abbalicious (requires Quicktime)

How did it feel to sing songs that someone else had chosen for you?

That was weird. They kept giving me wimpy songs I wouldn’t have chosen but I tried to rock them and put my style on them.

You said you wanted to prove you can sing, do you think the show achieved that for you?

I think people always saw me as the quiet one at the back in TrueBliss, and now people have a chance to see me as an individual and see that I can sing rock. I like fronting my covers band Exit 23. We have a lot of fun.

Do you have any backstage gossip to share with us?

No gossip. We’re like a little family. That’s the hardest part of leaving, I won’t be seeing them any more.

Which of the Dancing With The Stars contestants would you most like to be marooned on a desert island with?

Definitely Megan Alatini. We’d have lots of fun and get up to mischief.

What did you think of the media portrayal of Megan as cocky and over-confident?

I was disappointed. She’s not like that at all. Megan is such a sweet person. I thought she should have won. She was constantly good every week.

Would you be up for other reality TV shows like Dancing With The Stars, Treasure Island or anything similar?

No. I like singing and that’s my thing. Joe Cotton and I made a pact, that if one of us did Pop’s Ultimate Star the other one would have to do it but I wouldn’t be up for Treasure Island.

Who do you pick to win Pop’s Ultimate Star?

It’s difficult because everyone can sing, but I think it’s likely to be someone with a big fan base such as Rosita or Ben. However, I’d quite like to see Steve or Joe make it to the final.

What’s next for you after Pop’s Ultimate Star?

Performing with my covers band and Abbalicious and getting ready for the big day.

Best and Worst of Dancing with The Stars NZ

Stefano Olivieri and Suzanne Paul Paso Doble
Drum roll please. Here are our awards for this season’s Dancing With The Stars best and worst moments

Sizzle award
New Zealand’s sexiest woman, Hayley Holt, for that Rhumba.

Best judge’s quote
Craig Revel-Horwood: It’s enough to turn a gay man straight
(about Hayley Holt wrapping herself around Brendon Pongia during their Rhumba)

Cheek(s) award
Michael Laws for looking unaccountably hot wiggling his butt during the Jive

Best mascara award

  • Runner up: Frank it’s not macho to wear makeup Bunce
  • Winner: Michael Laws. What were the make-up gals thinking?

Best Tango
Brendan Cole and Craig Revel-Horwood sniping at each other throughout the competition

The Rodney Hide memorial ‘you call that dancing’ award

  • Runner up: Paul Holmes’ Thriller Paso Doble
  • Winner: Suzanne Paul’s freestyle dance. Since when does spending half the dance being twirled by your partner followed by manic running around the floor qualify as dancing?
To quote Michael Laws
Stefano Olivieri carried Suzanne for most of her final dance. If I had known you could score `10s' for looking decorous rather than dancing, I would have piggy-backed my partner Lauren for the entire 90 seconds. It may have launched a thousand fetish fantasies but, gee, it might have worked.

Best costume award
This was a toughy. So many gorgeous costumes but in the end the Paso Doble won it.

April & CsabaApril & Csaba
Tackiest costume
  • Runner up: Megan Alatini’s fruity bikini in the Samba
  • Winner: April Ieremia’s “naff” High School musical costume

Best necklace
Where to begin? Joint first equal Carol-Ann Hickmore and Krystal Stuart

Taking one for the team award

  • Special Merit award: Rebecca Nicholson for dancing with both Tim Shadbolt and Paul Holmes
  • Runner up: Michael Laws for dancing with a broken toe. Well he moaned about that a bit, so really the award is for being savvy enough to auction off the funny metal thing he stubbed his toe on and earn an extra $800 for his charity.
  • Winner: Krystal Stuart for dancing the Paso Doble with a broken toe and never uttering a word about the injury. Also ongoing bravery for dancing with Rodney Hide and taking the blame for the famous spear tackle fall.

Courage under fire:
Michael Laws for consistently smiling while being systematically taken apart by judge Craig Revel-Horwood

Charity we heard the most about:
The Suzanne Paul help me resurrect my career charity

The ego has landed award:
  • Runner up: Paul Holmes for thinking his Paso Doble was good
  • Winner: Megan Alatini for failure to accept constructive criticism from the judges without backchat

Most improved award
Jonny Williams – yes I know this is about the celebs but that boy can move and compared to last year he has improved in leaps and bounds.

Best dancer
Stefano Olivieri. How could you fail to win with that set of legs swivelling beside you? Expert, elegant and expressive Stefano Olivieri is one of the best dancers I have had the pleasure of watching. And who couldn’t love that gorgeous big smile?

WTF moment
  • Special Merit Award: Megan Alatini for telling the woman’s magazine how she has a ‘secret’ crush on dance partner the week after sharing her passionate bedroom secrets with another woman’s magazine the previous week
  • Runner up: Megan Alatini for telling partner Jonny Williams she couldn’t afford to pay him for ongoing dancing lessons. Say what? Didn’t she just get paid to do DWTS? Isn’t her husband on a lucrative playing contract in Japan? She’s not exactly destitute.
  • Winner: Suzanne Paul for telling Brendan Cole to “get over himself” and “go have a word for himself” because he dared to do his job and judge her.

Best pins
  • Runner up: Suzanne Paul
  • Winner: Candy Lane
These women are both similar ages, and wowser, would you take a look at those legs!

Best clanger
Candy Lane for continually muffing her scripted comedy. But we have to give credit (a) to Candy Lane for improving from season 1 and (b) to the script writers for reducing all that scripted nonsense

Smut award
Can only go to the ditzy Alison Leonard who has never heard a word she can’t imbue with some sexual meaning including telling Brendon Pongia women used to dial him for a good time, now they can dial him for good timing

The Forever Friends award for flirtation

  • Brendon Pongia and Hayley Holt
  • Greer Robson and Aaron Gilmore
  • Frank Bunce and Krystal Stuart
  • Megan Alatini and Jonny Williams

Dirty Dancing award
Brendan Cole and … anyone! But hey, who wouldn’t line up to dance with a man who can dance like that?

DWTS Aftermath

It seems people are still talking about the Megan Alatini / Suzanne Paul showdown and whether the best legs won on the night. According to a Close Up interview (video link) with Mark Sainsbury, Megan Alatini and Jonny Williams were in it right to the end but perhaps what gave Suzanne the winning edge was her ability to sell herself.

The Dominion Post has an entertaining piece on Dancing with the Stars, praising Candy Lane and Brendan Cole for their dynamic jive and letting us into a few behind the scenes stories.

HAVING been to a couple of these shows before, there's no such thing as a free lunch, for those privileged enough to be invited along.

You are strenuously encouraged to go "ohhh" in a hammy, crestfallen end-of-pier way when Jason reflects sadly on the loss of the previous week's competitor, and instructed to put on your happy face so that, should the camera pause to rest on your visage, you at least look like you're having the time of the life.
Whaaaat, you mean it's not spontaneous? All that fun, frivolity and heartfelt sympathy is scripted? Who'd have thought it? Not us, as Candy Lane struggles with her comic timing in each week's sad attempt at humour...

This week we couldn't stop chuckling when she muffed her lines. There was that famous incident when she was talking to Suzanne Paul about those legs. Oh yes, Suzanne twitters on cue, legs run in my family. Now that Suzanne has comic timing down pat.

Dutifully Candy Lane executes her well-worn and rehearsed spontaneous query to Stefano asking him what runs in his family. Stefano quipped that Suzanne always tells him that noses run in his family. Ah how we guffawed in our lounge. Poor Candy was all at sea. Either Stefano departed from the script (unlikely) or Candy doesn't recognise a pun when she hears one.

The Dominion Post writer also refers to a Close Up piece showing a young ballroom dancer, Scott Savage from Mosgiel, who is laughed at by his peers. We're sure that will all change when he's old enough to dance with the likes of the hot and sexy . If you want to see what a buffed ballroom body looks like take a gander at Brendan Cole in the altogether and you will see that now is a good time to be encouraging your sons, brothers and partners to be getting out on the dance floor.

Brendan Cole: Suzanne not my #1

I spotted an interesting news clip on TV One's midday news suggesting that there were questions over whether Suzanne Paul was a worthy winner of this year's Dancing with the Stars crown.

The news item included a quick sound bite from judge Brendan Cole looking perplexed and saying that Suzanne wasn't his pick as the best dancer. We checked his scores and saw that he had marked Megan Alatini one point higher than Suzanne over the three dances so it seems like he genuinely preferred Megan.

However, we were fascinated to see that this news item was omitted from TV One's evening news at 6 pm. Instead the evening news was full of comments like Suzanne Paul, our "comeback queen", as well as comments from Suzanne that she was dancing with a fractured rib. We had noticed that her performance deteriorated a few weeks ago, so these injuries may have contributed.

The voting
There was also a short interview with host Jason Gunn, stating that the audience vote was so close that the producers counted, recounted and then counted again to make sure they had it right! Come on TVNZ - publish a full account of the votes so we can see just how close it was. Was it just a handful of votes or are we talking hundreds or even thousands of votes difference between the two dancers?

We also wonder what the point is of having the judges score the final episode when their vote counts for 50% but the audience 50% is the swing vote in the event that the audience prefers one competitor and the judges rank a different competitor more highly. It seems a waste of time when the result is decided on the audience vote.

TVNZ also reported that Suzanne Paul will be launching a new product on television in the near future. Check out close up for an interview with Suzanne Paul.

What we think:
Megan Alatini did perform the more difficult routines and was technically a stronger dancer. Suzanne Paul had better characterisation and "x factor" although we were extremely unimpressed with her free-style which was basic and lacked precision in performance - but perhaps only a dancer would notice that. Even Suzanne commented when watching the video of her dance that her legs were bent when they should be straight. We struggle to understand how that performance could be awarded three 10s, although we do applaud partner Stefano for choosing a fun routine that the public would find entertaining.

In reality, no one loses. We're sure there will be many future opportunities for both Megan and Suzanne to appear on television in future reality television programs and possibly presenting roles.

We'll post links to video interviews and a more detailed recap shortly.
