The new season of Dancing With The Stars starts this Tuesday on TV One so we thought we’d remind you who was in past competitions.

In the first year of the New Zealand Dancing With The Stars (2005) model Nicky Watson and partner Kiel de Buisson were first to go home. There were tears from Nicky on the night, but judge Brendan Cole was on hand to comfort her…
Westie Ewen Gilmour and leggy Lauren de Boeck went home next. Ewen rode his Triumph motorbike onto stage and Lauren pulled off her skirt, but it wasn’t enough to save Ewen from elimination.
Georgina Beyer and Michael Hoggard were next to go. Georgina was the only celebrity who did not keep her fee for participating in Dancing With The Stars. She donated her entire fee – thought to be in the region of $16,000 – to charity.
Actress Theresa Healey and Peter Wales, expected to go far in Dancing With The Stars, was a shock elimination in the next episode.
Netballer Bernice Mene improved dramatically throughout the show with help from partner d'Artagnan Kennedy, but it wasn’t enough to keep her from elimination.
For one frightening moment it appeared that popular Mayor Tim Shadbolt and partner Rebecca Nicholson might make it to the finals, but at last his dream run came to an end.
Shane Cortese and Nerida Lister (now going by maiden name Nerida Jantti) didn’t take away the Dancing With The Stars crown but they did earn the honour of being the parents of the first DWTS baby.
Shane took his shirt off in the final episode, but the move backfired on him with voters.
All Black Norm Hewitt and partner Carol-Ann Hickmore were crowned the winners, although there were a few moments of nail biting when the scores were tied after the judges' had their say.
After their magnificent Paso Doble (the first dance to receive perfect 10s) Norm's popularity with the public was sealed, and the public voted him the winner on the night.
Norm and Shane joined forces after DWTS to create the DVD 'The Dancing Diet' which featured their DWTS partners, Nerida Jantti, Carol-Ann Hickmore and Norm's wife aerobics champion Arlene Thomas-Hewitt.

Martin Devlin Dancing Baboon?

Martin Motormouth Devlin enters the 2008 season of Dancing with the Stars with the moniker 'Dancing Baboon' after he told various gossip mags and newspapers
Can I dance? Put it this way: Picture if you will a baboon being taught to play tennis. Now imagine that same baboon on stilts. He goes on to say
I was born a klutz. I have no natural born rhythm. Reading a beat comes as easy to me as understanding algorithmic calculus.
It sounds like Martin is setting himself up to be the underdog for this year's competition, perhaps hoping that there will be another Vote for the Worst campaign (which last year supported Mayor Michael and Paul Holmes).
Professional dancing partner and trainer Lauren de Boeck says that Martin is the best of the batch. To which Martin quipped that her other partners (Michael Laws and Ewen Gilmore) were gormless gimps. He reckons that Lauren was "given a leg of lamb to dance with".
On one point, Martin Devlin is refreshingly honest. Most celebrities get twitchy when asked about the money they are paid to be on Dancing with the Stars, and last year more than a few of them grumbled about how they were only earning the minimum wage for being on the show. This despite the fact that all the press releases talked about how they were only doing it to earn money for their charity!
Reality check here, mister. It came week one courtesy of love interest who said to me something like: "listen here Mr Moan-ey, you’re getting paid to go and learn to dance. Most people go to work and do actual jobs, so pull your head in Nureyev and just go get it done".The truth is that the celebrities are well rewarded for their efforts with a weekly wage estimated to be upwards of $2,500 and all the free publicity they can handle.
Women can be so cruel sometimes, can’t they? Especially when they’re dishing out the truth.
Martin has won Sports Broadcaster Of The Year four times and has columns in the Sunday News and Sunday Star Times. He is also a regular on TV One's sports jock show Game of 2 Halves. An interesting bit of trivia (disputed by the panel of Martin Devlin, Mike King, Marc Ellis and Matthew Ridge) is that the panellists and guests get told some of the questions in advance. According to NZ HeraldIf you had a sneaking suspicion that the guests of Game of Two Halves were pretty smart with their answers you'd be right - they know what questions are coming.
A source who worked on the TV One sports quiz show told the Weekend Herald that guests were primed on what to expect - particularly on any questions coming up in their sport.
"If it was Greg Murphy, for example, before the show we'd be saying, 'Remember that guy who crashed into you in such-and-such a race?'
"What's given away depends on the calibre of the guest, but we don't want them to look stupid."
The source said David Tua's infamous "O for awesome" appearance was awkward and the boxer would probably never be allowed to forget it.
Another source who worked on the programme said even the regulars - Martin Devlin, Mike King, Marc Ellis and Matthew Ridge - were given answers to some rounds, such as the charades category.
That had even led to the correct answer being given, despite the wrong charade being performed.
However, a spokeswoman for TVNZ denied the regulars were given any of the answers before the show screened.
She admitted celebrity guests were briefed on the types of topics coming up, saying the show was an entertainment programme all about the "banter, joking and interaction".

Lauren de Boeck Honey Bee
If you've been watching TV2's new karaoke style game, The Singing Bee, you may have noticed a familiar pair of legs in the background. The eponymous Candy Lane Dance Company provides the dancers aka The Honey Bees for the show. Included in the group is Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Lauren de Boeck who will this year be partnering Martin Devlin. Was it just me, or were there times when it seemed like the expression on Lauren's face said, "this is really cheesy."
Lauren is the 2004 National A Grade and Open Ballroom Champion, the 2004 National NZFDT A Grade New Vogue Champion and a 2004 National A Grade Latin American dance finalist. She is also trained in ballet and jazz dancing.
You can also check out Lauren in this video of the Candy Lane Dancers.

Candy Lane Dancers Video
Candy Lane is now well known as the Dancing with The Stars host who keeps stumbling over her scripted spontaneous lines; unlike cohost Jason Gunn who just stumbles over his feet.
Updated: Video of The Candy Lane Dancers
Many of the DWTS dancers are members of her group, with the stunningly original name, The Candy Lane Dance Company. Check out Candy Lane with Nerida Jantti (nee Lister), Brian Jones, Rebecca Nicholson, Lauren de Boeck and others from the group in this video of them entertaining the crowd at the 2007 Qantas Television Awards.

Holmes confirms horizontal tango
In his Herald on Sunday column, Paul Holmes commented on the public’s constant speculation about couples taking their dance floor magic into the bedroom.
There is no doubt some who have taken part have found themselves engaged horizontally with their dance partners, such is the power of what Candy Lane, with her ruthless exacting wit, calls ‘the dancing fanny’However spoilsport that he is he refuses to name names, which leaves Miss Prozac with the task of analysing each of the couples. Oh how she hates to gossip. We have also heard rumours that some of the judges, namely Bad Boy Brendan Cole, have been engaging in a bit of extra dance tuition. There is also gossip that two of the professional dancers are exchanging bodily fluids.
Brendan Cole
We reported earlier that Brendan Cole has been seen dirty dancing with April Ieremia. Of course, that’s hardly news. Brendan has been seen dancing with nearly all the celebrity gals in the show as well as those from Shortland Street, and various celebrity functions.
Verdict
There have been no recent sightings of this pairing so we’re guessing that little romance has bitten the dust.
April Ieremia and Csaba Szirmai
Csaba Szirmai has said that he has a girlfriend but he has also been seen giving April some “extra tuition”. Meanwhile April has been telling all the woman’s gossip magazines that she’s blissfully happy as a single gal. Hmmm maybe she just likes one night stands.
Verdict
Give that gal a few drinks and she’s anyones. We think it would be quicker to ask who April hasn’t slept with.
Paul Holmes and Rebecca Nicholson
No no no no no. This would be just plain wrong. Besides, we’re not sure that The Gnome is up to the job. Between his prostate cancer and osteoarthritis he’d need several blue pills (Viagra for the unenlightened) to keep up with the young and energetic dance partner. If his stilted and wooden performance on the dance floor is anything to go by this would be a very uninspiring way to spend an evening. The lovely and patient Rebecca is dating hunky Blair Strang who was ambulance officer Rangi in Shortland Street. The Gnome is married to
Verdict
Why would Rebecca Nicholson slip between The Gnome’s sheets when she has Blair Strang waiting for her at home. ‘Nuff said.
Michael Laws and Lauren de Boeck
Leggy Lauren de Boeck has shown that she is more than a match for Mayor Michael’s stubborn ways, keeping him on task with dancing, if not in time. We have heard no rumours of any hanky panky with this pairing.
Verdict
After a few hours with Mayor Michael we think Lauren de Boeck is far more likely to be found burying her snout in a bottle of gin than engaging in any horizontal tango.
Megan Alatini and Jonny Williams
Megan is married with three children and the much younger Jonny has a girlfriend. Not that this has ever stopped anyone in the past. No rumours have surfaced about this pairing although hubby Pita was initially apprehensive about the steamy body coupling on the dance floor. And no wonder, rumours were flying that Jonny broke up with his girlfriend during DWTS.
Verdict
Rumours are HOT where this couple are concerned.
Frank Bunce and Krystal Stuart
There have been persistent rumours and gossip about these two, to the point that some newspapers speculated there would be an official announcement that they are a couple. Both Frank and Krystal have publicly denied any romantic involvement. Frank insists he’s happily partnered to Carla Rawson and Krystal Stuart says the slutty dancing is an attempt to win votes. She even went so far as to tell Herald on Sunday that Frank is old enough to be her father! Instead she says they will be friends forever.
Verdict
Friends forever is code for we did it but now we’ve been caught so we had to call it off. Of course they did it!
Greer Robson and Aaron Gilmore
Yet another couple that have promised to be friends forever. In the last show Aaron was seen kissing Greer on the end and showing extreme affection. Both are married. Greer has two children and plans to add a third to the brood. Let’s hope he has husband Scott’s features.
Verdict
Friends forever… Of course they did it!
Suzanne Paul and Stefano Olivieri
The matching star tattoos is suggestive (of idiocy and masochism) but Stefano Olivieri has told GayNZ that he is looking for a man.
Verdict
We think this an unlikely horizontal coupling
Brendon Pongia and Hayley Holt
The two bodies of the competition. How could they resist each other? Both have made public denials of any romance and as they are both single there is no reason for them to be coy. However we have already seen that Hayley Holt is good at keeping secrets. Treasure Island the Pirates of the Pacific was filmed many months ago and Hayley managed to keep mum about her winnings prompting partner Brendon Pongia to say that he didn’t find out she’d won until the show aired.
Verdict
Hayley Holt could keep secrets from the KGB. Anything is possible and let’s just say we wouldn’t be surprised if there is something extra going on.

Mayor Michael must be voted off tonight
The guy has a broken toe, so I was prepared to extend him some latitude but tonight I've decided it's time for him to go. Arrogant, rude and generally unpleasant. And those are the nicest things I can think of to say about him.
The rehearsals were interesting to watch as Mayor Michael argued with Lauren de Boeck who showed that she’s tougher than she looks. That was a big mistake Michael – I think viewers will be voting you out in droves after witnessing your arrogance.
On top of that you crossed the line with judge Craig Revel Horwood making oblique references to his sexual preferences when Craig commented
"The best part was when you ripped Lauren’s skirt off."
Replied Michael, "Which is saying a lot for you Craig"

Last Chance to Purchase Mayor Michael's Folly
Michael Laws is auctioning the dart oche that he stubbed his foot, on complete with his autograph and complimentary citizenship of Wanganui - well, it would have to be free. Miss Prozac doesn't imagine anyone paying to live in Wanganui.
However, as a bonus the oche includes the lovely Lauren's moniker and proof that Mayor Mike can't spell. (For the grammatically challenged, it has Michaels' Folly written on it, but it should be Michael's Folly. Probably a good thing Mayor Mike is retiring, but Miss Prozac worries that he may pass his spelling and grammar skills onto his hapless children.)
Amanda from Manawatu holds the top bid of $800. Hmmm Miss Prozac thinks she could buy her own dart board and a piece of wood oche and have money left over for a couple of pairs of Manolo Blahnik dancing shoes.
If you're keen to buy this steel oche, and let's face it, what self respecting home owner wouldn't want a lump of steel in their dining room, you have until the witching hour to place your bid.
Check out the auction at Trade Me. Your donation will go to the Cancer Society of New Zealand Wanganui Branch.

Pace and Passion on Dancing With The Stars
Tonight is the first elimination on Dancing with the Stars. Who will be leaving the spotlight? Will it be Michael Laws and his broken toe or will there be a shock departure from one of the favourites?
Tonight contestants dance the Quickstep, the fastest of the ballroom dances and a test of stamina or the Rhumba – the dance of love.
After last week’s “naff” music, costumes and choreography April Ieremia and Csaba Szirmai are this week getting over disappointment and moving forward. They were first on the floor dancing the Quickstep took to the floor. He in hat and tails and April in a flowing ballgown. They started with a Charleston style improvisation but it didn’t mesh well into the rest of the dance. This time they chose the music ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ which had a more traditional feel. The performance was rhythmic but lacking the grace necessary for ballroom.
From the judges, Brendan Cole said Csaba had not taken the judges advice. He said the frame was floppy and the style didn’t show up April’s skills. Carol Ann said April’s topline wasn’t there. Craig said it was better than last week, good cross-section of steps, lively but the beginning was out of time and too heavy. It should be light and lively. Alison also liked it better than last week and said she was grumpy. She felt that Csaba should have nursed April around the dance floor more – him being the coat hanger and April the beautiful hanging.
Judges results 4, 6, 5, 5 for a total of 21
Paul Holmes and Rebecca Nicholson danced the Rhumba, but rehearsal had to break to chat to Rachel Hunter, who competed on the US and UK versions of the show. Holmes danced with his bowtie undone while Rebecca draped herself over him.
Memories of Rodney Hide, with lots of posing and no Latin hip action. He had sticky fingers that looked like they belonged in a baseball mitt. To be fair he was better than Rodney, but it was stiff and ungainly. Rebecca, of course, looked magical in white. Their music was Cliff Richard’s ‘Some People’.
Judging: Carol Ann thought he did well and mastered the timing, but felt he needed to be pushed to do more. Craig thought it was tragic. It was stiff, still and stilted with sticky transfer of weight and forcing his hips into submission. He described Paul’s hands as egg slides – yes that was the word I was searching for. Alison, said teaching a man of a certain age to Rhumba is a challenge and that it was a sexy performance, quipping she was surprised that no one has snapped him up for a prime time television slot. Brendan thought he did an alright job, room for improvement, but potential to go far in the competition.
Candy Lane highlighted that Paul can’t do any lifts or drops due to his past injuries and brittle bones.
Scores: 5, 7, 3, 7 for a total of 22
Before Brendon Pongia took to the stage there was an official apology from Jason Gunn that there would be no hip action accompanied by huge sighs of disappointment from the audience.
Jason ran through Brendon’s daily routine. He trains at the gym for an hour with weights, then to Avalon studios for makeup, the Good Morning Show and planning for the next day, with dancing practice in the afternoon. Dancing the Quickstep, Brendon looked smart in his tails and Hayley Holt looked elegant in red. Brendon started with a mini haka and then and scatter-chassed his way across the floor to the music ‘Reet Petite’. An extremely energetic and fun if not graceful performance from Brendon ‘the body’ Pongia.
Craig loved the original opening, and said Brendon moved brilliantly, looked fantastic, however it was heavy and the pigeon feet were driving him mad.
Brendan didn’t like the beginning and said it belonged in Tango or Paso Doble.
Alison said he needed to tuck his bottom under as it was poking out.
Carol Ann also commented on the pigeon toes and a few missed heel leads but loved it.
Judges scores 5, 8, 7, 8 for a total of 28
Frank Bunce and Krystal Stuart danced the Rhumba. In a costume reminiscent of Norm Hewitt in season 1, Frank wore a V-necked black sparkly top. It was a very sexy slick routine and Frank showed significant signs of improvement from week 1. Good movement and timing to the music ‘Move Closer’.
Judges comments: Alison thought it was fantastic, Brendan said finally someone with a good interpretation of the music and song, Carol Ann said chemistry and movement excellent. Craig said a well constructed and intelligent routine and absolutely smashing. A very positive set of comments from the judges.
The scores 8, 8, 8, 9 = 33 which put Frank and Krystal in the early lead.
Described by Candy as Fifty and Frisky this week Suzanne Paul was kept on her toes with the Quickstep.
Partnered by Stefano Olivieri, Suzanne performed beautifully and showed no sign of her rib injury. She looked elegant and her facial expressions showed she was enjoying herself. If I’m that dainty and fit at 50 I’ll be a happy gal. They danced to ‘Putting on the Ritz’ which was a very upbeat fun tune.
Brendan Cole commented that it was great choreography and the performance was superb. Craig loved it too – he said it took him back to the roaring 20s. Alison said Suzanne is very capable of both Latin and ballroom, with great foot speed and style. Carol Ann said they’d be around for a few more weeks. This caused Candy Lane to comment that the judges must have taken their happy pills and she congratulated Suzanne on her mastery of a difficult routine.
Scores 8, 9, 9, 9 = 35 overtaking Frank and Krystal for the leading position.
Greer Robson and Aaron Gilmore danced the Rhumba, the dance she has been most frightened of. It was a very smooth performance, extremely graceful and elegant. She could have afforded to relax her facial expression. Beautiful highlights with drops and lifts. Greer said she found it hard to look Aaron in the eye and needed to build trust. It sounded like a rugby match with her repeated comment “All credit to Aaron”. Their music was Brooke Fraser’s ‘What to do with Daylight’. Nice to hear some Kiwi music.
Carol Ann said she was glad that she said what she did last week as they had put the work in and it was excellent. Brendan thought they had mastered the dance even though there were some dodgy bits.
Scores 8, 9, 8, 8 = 33 placing them second equal at this stage.
Michael Laws and Lauren de Boeck were up next. How will he cope with the Quickstep with a broken toe? Jason Gunn mentioned again the auction for the oche that did the damage to Mayor Michael’s toe. It’s signed by Lauren de Boeck and the auction is still open for bidding.
They appeared to lose their timing in a couple of places and he looked awfully awkward bordering on spastic. It was a pretty laid back performance considering it’s meant to be the fastest of the ballroom dances. I kept being distracted – it looked like he wearing eyeliner. They chose the tap your feet tune ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.
Alison enjoyed watching Michael’s performance and liked his frame. Craig said there was a plethora of things wrong with the dance, there were the usual timing issues and footwork and it was more of a hoe down than a Quickstep. Despite this he thought it was a vast improvement.
Their score 4, 6, 3, 6 = 19 which is the lowest score so far.
Megan Alatini and Jonny Williams danced the Rhumba to Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’. TVNZ showed footage of her at a photo shoot during the week wearing very little and looking confident with her toned body - this is not a shy girl. Her dancing was beautiful and elegant, but is it just me or does her facial expression appear somewhat smug?
Brendan thought it was a fantastic rhumba and was speechless. “Sensational. Oh my Lord,” he said. Carol Ann wondered if she was sleeping with the work she must be putting in to her routine. The first 10 of the competition was awarded by Alison to Megan and Jonny. Candy also said it was a beautiful routine with wonderful choreography.
The scores were 9, 9, 8, 10 = 36 putting Megan and Jonny in the lead for the second week running. Continuing his trend from last week Michael was bottom of the judges table for the second week running.
The Decision
At this point the vote lines officially closed leaving us to wonder, who will be leaving Dancing With The Stars? The public phone votes are added to the judges score. Each is weighted 50%.
Jason and Candy announced that the six safe couples in no particular order are:
- Suzanne and Stefano
- Greer and Aaron
- Frank and Krystal
- Paul and Rebecca
- Brendon and Hayley
- Megan and Jonny
The first couple to leave was April and Csaba who paid for the poor choreography and costuming. In her interview April asked, “Who doesn’t know the music from High School Musical?” Ummmm well that would be me. Miss Prozac enjoys a good song and dance but she can’t ever remembering seeing High School Musical and she suspects that most of the audience was in the same boat.
April said her time on the show had been enjoyable. I guess her charity, the Breast Cancer Foundation, will be even more disappointed.

This week's Competition:

The Toe Boots April
Proving that a broken toe is no impediment to success, Michael Laws ousted April Ieremia and Hungarian born partner Csaba Szirmai in last night’s first elimination on Dancing With The Stars.
In both the first and second episodes Michael Laws scored at the bottom of the table according to the judging panel. However, the judges score counts for only 50% of the votes and public vote put Michael ahead of April.
The expression on April's face said it all. She was disappointed and surprised to be leaving the show. The irony of it is that Michael indicated he'd rather not be dancing with his broken toe and taking criticism from new judge Craig Revel-Horwood.
Feedback from the message boards was mixed. Some felt that Csaba had blown it with his choreography. There were also murmurs about April's costume (Chubby and Csaba) and overexposure with her also being seen on TV2's Treasure Island The Pirates of the Pacific. While many felt that Michael was a hopeless dancer, others admired his courage and thought he looked like he was having fun.

The Glitz and the Glamour of DWTS
We were promised eight celebrities plucked from television, politics, music and sports for season 3 of Dancing with the Stars. Candy Lane stated that this year's celebs would be the best so far, and they didn't disappoint.
During the show they will be learning five Latin and five ballroom dances. The dances tonight were the Waltz where the focus is on:
- Timing
- Technique
- Topline
And the Cha cha:
- Characterization
- Choreography
- Correct footwork
The show kicked off with a repeat of Aaron Gilmore and Lorraine Downes’ series 2 winning Pasa Doble. You could feel the energy and excitement; what a great way to start this season’s show!

Paul Mercurio reckoned he was “bummed out” about now being able to join us for Season 3 of DWTS. We were introduced to his replacement Craig Revel-Horwood including a clip where he described fellow judge Brendan Cole and his partner from Strictly Come Dancing as limp and lack-lustre.
Suzanne Paul described partner Stefano Oliveieri as gorgeous and a sweetie before taking to the floor to do a Cha Cha to Anastacia’s I’m outta love. It was a
pretty good showing from the infomercial queen who appeared confident and polished. Her upper body appeared stiff but overall it was a relaxed and competent performance for the first celeb out of the starting gates. The judges were very positive.True to form, the only criticism came from Craig who said her neck was lurching forward and the line of her arms needed improvement, but described her timing and footwork as being good. Brendan also commented on the stiffness of her arms and topline. An excellent performance despite injuring her neck and ribs and sporting large bruises.
The judges awarded 7, 8, 7, 8 for a total of 30 points.
Frank Bunce is renowned for his fancy footwork on the rugby field but how will he fare on the dance
floor? He reckons he doesn’t even dance when he’s by himself so this will be a challenge for him.Paired with spear-tackle Krystal Stuart, Frank danced the Waltz to classic melody Your True Love. He appeared nervous but completed the waltz without any mistakes. It was a reasonable first effort but lacked the polish that we hope to see in later shows. Carol wanted him to stand up more and improve his frame. Craig was horrified by his flat-footed laboured performance which he said improved as the dance went on.
Judges scored 5, 6, 5, 7 for a total of 23.
Michael Laws reckons you can’t suddenly teach a 50 year old body to dance – awww come on Mike, of course, you can do it. Suzanne Paul is 50. Surely, if she can do it you can too. Ummm well, maybe not.
Michael broke his toe in two places which has added to the struggle to learn a new
dance and be intimate on the dance floor with partner Lauren de Boeck. Describing himself as the ‘token unco’ Michael spent more time posing than Cha Cha-ing but appeared to be having a lot of fun prompting Jason Gunn to quip that Michael brought his ‘dance face’. Either that or he had a toffee stuck in his cheek.Craig said his timing was off, his mouth gaping open, the footwork flat and pigeon toed and went on to give him a score of 1. Laws took it all in good spirit. The other judges gave constructive criticism describing the performance as okay.
Scores: 4, 6, 1, 6 for a total of 17.
Greer Robson first
appeared on the screen at the age of two years so we can expect her to be very confident on stage. Partnered with last year’s winning dancer Aaron Gilmore, Robson is enjoying the dancing and says it’s great for getting rid of excess baby blubber. Pretty in pink, Greer danced a flowing Waltz with grace and poise.Alison’s one criticism was that she was holding too tightly to partner Aaron. Craig loved her performance and congratulated Gilmore and Robson on their connect
