Lionman Cleared After Lion Bite

ZionZion Wildlife Gardens was cleared after a volunteer had her hand and thumb mauled by a lion. Zion Wildlife Gardens is the park featured on popular television show Lion Man.

However, the Department of Labour warned Lion Man Craig Busch that he breached the Health and Safety in Employment Act by failing to notify the authorities of the workplace injury.

A volunteer worker was "seriously injured" when her hand was bitten by a young lion when she was guiding a group of visitors at Zion Wildlife Gardens on April 23. She was treated for the injury at Whangarei Hospital.

The lion cub had bitten the woman through a hole in the fence designed for television cameras to film through for the popular Lionman TV series.

A subsequent Department of Labour investigation placed most of the blame for the incident on the worker. [source]

Lion Man Craig Busch Roars On

Lion ManAfter a tough few years, Lion Man Craig Busch will be relieved that the Whangarei District Council has approved a resource consent to allow the Zion Wildlife Gardens to expand their operation. Late last year the Council served an abatement notice after it discovered that the Park had breached the conditions of the existing consent granted in 2002.

Craig's mum, Patricia, who manages the park, told The Northern Advocate

We've had record numbers of international visitors through the sanctuary this season, and many say they came specifically to New Zealand to visit Zion.

The Council received 21 submissions opposing the expansion which will allow the Park to expand its operation, as well as legalising some of the existing structures.

The Park is a local tourist attraction and it would have been a shame for the operations to be suspended, but you can understand neighbours being nervous. Most of the submissions related to increased traffic, noise and safety issues. One resident reckoned he could hear the lions roaring from his home 8 kilometres (5 miles) away. I know sound carries in the country, but I think that would be a rare occurrence. And, surely lions are not much noisier than a paddock of bulls?

Of greater concern is the safety issue. Many neighbours feared that an animal may escape and kill someone, as a tiger did recently when it escaped from its enclosure in the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day, 2007.
Mechanic Darcy Gilberd said, "It was brought up in the hearing that there'd been 13 escapes from enclosures. Their lawyers didn't challenge that - they only said nothing had ever got out of the park."
Craig Busch has also been dealing with a well publicised court case for the assault of his ex partner Karen Greybrook, a legal battle with builder Rob Reece who claimed the Lion Man owed him more than $400,000, as well as fighting to gain consent for the additional buildings (work was done without permission) and to allow for increased traffic and other changes.

The Northern Advocate has the best record of the events on the night of the assault.
According to the police summary, on January 15, 2005, Busch had an argument with his partner over using tiger cubs in wedding photos.

He told her the relationship was over and demanded she leave.

Later that day a barbecue at the park was attended by several guests.

By 9pm everyone except Busch, his partner and a married couple had left. Shortly afterward Busch also left to go to a party.

The couple stayed at the park as they had been drinking and went to bed about 1.30am.

Ms Greybrook was upset and was consoled by the couple who told her she could stay in their room.

The couple had undressed completely by that stage and were in bed. The complainant undressed but left her underpants on and lay on the bed.

The summary said Busch arrived home and said: "Nobody does this to me." He was told nothing had happened, but grabbed Ms Greybrook by the hair and pulled her partly from the bed before leaving the room.

Busch returned and pushed her over, causing a gash which required stitches. She received a cut above the eye, a fractured vertebra and bruising.

Ms Greybrook woke up the next morning in pain and fed the tiger cubs before returning to bed.

Busch then told her: "As soon as you have your car going and your things in it, you're out of here and I'm done with you."

She pleaded with Busch, but he loaded her property in the car. He started the vehicle and picked up the woman, putting her in the driver's seat.

He then climbed on her lap and drove her to the outer gate, locking it behind her.

Karen Greybrook on Lion Man Assault

This week 60 Minutes Summer Series will repeat their story Lion Man, which originally aired in July 2007 after Craig Busch pleaded guilty to assault. The other charges were dropped after his ex lover decided not to testify.

I think it is a shame that ex partner Karen Greybrook decided not to testify in court, as the public will never know the truth. A media trial is simply not the same.

I found the 60 Minutes story compelling, with the video footage of people claiming he has ripped them off together with video evidence of Craig being less than gentle with the lions but I would have liked to have heard Craig’s side of the story. I’d also have liked to know more about the basis for the original charges which included a charge of “unlawful sexual connection”.

He said he pulled her away and she simply fell on the floor.

However, Karen received a serious head wound, damaged ribs and a fractured back bone. Her doctor told us he examined her after the assaults and he considered Craig’s explanation very “unlikely”.

Had Karen testified then there would have been a chance for both Karen and Craig to tell their stories under oath and been cross-examined.

Their friends Des and Hermes White, who were found in bed with Karen, could also have been cross examined and expert medical testimony could have been introduced to determine whether the injuries sustained were simply a case of Karen falling awkwardly, or, as 60 Minutes suggest, another example of a man with previous charges for domestic assault harming his partner.

I personally don’t believe Craig’s version that “she simply fell”, but nor do I accept the version that Des and Hermes gave of the evening’s events. They say they feared for Karen’s safety, but they didn’t call the police or make any attempt to get in there to help her. It also stretches credibility that three people would lie in bed semi-naked just to provide comfort.

Monday night’s 60 Minutes tells the story of Craig Busch who originally appeared on our screens in his own show, The Lion Man where he worked with ferocious animals.

From the moment The Lion Man appeared on our screens, Craig Busch has been good for the press – cute photos of newborn cubs, hands-on tours of his Zion Wildlife park – even a bit of self-promotion as the inspiration for Narnia’s Aslan. His show has also spawned DVDs of series one and two, as well as a 2008 Lion Man calendar.

However there’s another, less appealing side to the Lion Man. Busch pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner, Karen Greybrook, and as she tells it, those assaults were terrifying. It also appears that he ripped off a land owner.

Lion Man is produced by Great Southern Television. Managing Director and Executive Producer, Philip Smith issued the following statement
In terms of The Lion Man returning, I feel you should watch the show and make your own judgments.

The project at Zion Wildlife Gardens is in fact the largest big cat sanctuary in the world. They have 48 cats – all extinct in the wild. They have a breeding programme for White Lions that is the most advanced in the world. The park has 10 white lions – there are about 70 left in the world. So they hold the key to the preservation of this species. That is why people fly in from around the world – every day – to visit this special park.

The park is also a major employer of a number of conservationists who work tirelessly to save these animals. To go up there and see what these people are doing is quite staggering.

It is not about one person. It is not just about Craig, although his contribution is considerable.

You mentioned a piece of footage about Craig mishandling animals. For the five years I have produced the Lion Man we have never filmed anything like it. I seem to remember it showed him pulling a lion on a rope. The 2500 hours of footage we have of unedited film consistently shows Craig as a very kind and caring animal handler. I encourage everyone to watch episode 2 of the new series. Then decide about Craig, It is the best episode we have ever made of the show.

As a secondary point the series is also one of the most successful in NZ History. It plays in 93 countries. When we say 93 countries we are not talking about one broadcast by Animal Planet – beamed out all over the planet. We are talking about 93 free to air television channels (not niche digital channels) around the world like TV2 or TV3 – often in primetime. As we know, the series illustrates a group of New Zealanders running a pioneering environmental campaign. It highlights New Zealand full stop.

And some of the revenue gained from these broadcasts actually helps fund the entire project.

So GSTV was left with a big decision. Scrap the entire television project or go forward. Craig Busch would not have been the victim, It would have been the environmental project, the dedicated local staff – and most importantly – the cats. It was a big call.

When we weighed up all the facts, and the incredible personal cost already worn by the Lion Man himself, we decided to continue with the series.

We took the heat off TVNZ, and offered them the opportunity, like 93 other countries, to simply buy the finished show. This means they didn’t spend any taxpayer money making it. As a result TVNZ has not changed its mind on anything, as asserted by your column. TVNZ all along said it would not commission another series. And it hasn’t. It has simply bought a finished product.

Well time for the show to go to air, fingers crossed it goes well. Thanks for thinking of us – and keep watching (everything!).

Lion Man Returns Under a Cloud

The Lion ManAlthough threesomes are very much in vogue for some of TV's celebrities, including NZ's best known calendar girl Nicky Watson, Lion Man Craig Busch was less than impressed when he found his then partner Karen Greybrook in bed with two of their friends, Des & Hermes White.

Craig Busch has since pleaded guilty to the 2005 assault

She (Karen Greybrook) suffered a lumbar fracture, bruising and a cut head during the assault. Busch was ordered to pay Ms Greybrook $8000.

Craig's TV show Lion Man was dropped by TVNZ with no plans to screen it. The judge deemed Craig's anger and subsequent assault "human and understandable" although representatives from Woman's Refuge felt it sent the wrong message to men about violence in the home. A TV3 poll found the public supported Craig and felt that the negative publicity was sufficient punishment. Craig has an earlier conviction for assault against a female in 1991.

In a reversal of their previous decision TVNZ has decided to screen Lion Man
TVNZ said The Lion Man had a strong following here and overseas and the purchase of the programme was made in response to a perceived demand, despite the associated issues.

Spokeswoman Megan Richards said Busch's convictions and the publicity surrounding his personal life had compromised the enjoyment of the programme for some sections of society.

"The decision was made on the basis that the New Zealand public has been well-informed about the controversial aspects of Mr Busch's personal life through intensive media coverage at the time of the court's judgment, so viewers are in a position to make an informed individual decision about whether to support the programme or not."
Questions still remain over a man convicted twice of assaulting a female and the family friendly image of TV show The Lion Man. Miss Prozac for one will be boycotting the show.

TV3's 60 Minutes profiled Craig Busch and showed another side to the man that had previously been perceived as a gentle man, helping lions and tigers. The TV3 video interviewed Des and Hermes White as well as a number of people that felt they had been "conned" by The Lion Man.

Editor's note:
TV3 is screening the 60 Minutes Lion Man investigation again on Monday 7th January 2008 at 7:30pm.

Lion Man dropped by TVNZ

TVNZ has elected not to screen the third series of popular television show Lion Man and TV3 have indicated they are unlikely to pick up the show, despite it's international success and DVD sales. We say, kudos to TVNZ for showing such fine judgment.

The Lion Man is a hero and role model to children. For him to receive implicit approval for his actions in assaulting his wife, and sexually violating her or the married couple is abhorrent to us. This man should not grace our television screens. We understand him being upset, however his reaction is out of proportion. To yell, is understandable. To drag her out of the bed, damage the vertebrae in her back and leave her requiring nine stitches is an extremely violent reaction that should not be tolerated.

A clear message needs to be sent to the public that hurting another person is not right under circumstances when nothing more than a man's pride is being threatened.

The Lion Man pleaded guilty to two charges of assault. The remaining six charges included a charge of sexual violation by way of unlawful sexual connection were not pursued. These were serious charges, which could have resulted in jail time. Craig's actions and subsequent lack of remorse are sending entirely the wrong message to anyone of any age with anger management issues.

Most broadcasters require anyone who is contracting to them or appearing in their shows to sign agreements prohibiting them from doing anything that may bring the broadcaster into disrepute. It was for this reason, that there was speculation that Brendon Pongia could be in the firing line after his drunken interview on a morning radio show.

In this instance, the Lion Man television series is produced by Great Southern Television. However, TVNZ have clearly indicated that they are not happy with the current image of Craig Busch, or that they have concerns about future incidents. TV3 have no plans to schedule the show, which is hardly surprising given that they plan to air an investigation into the assault on Monday's 60 Minutes show, at 7:30pm.

The Lion Man appeared on our screens in his own series, seemingly from nowhere, three years ago. From that moment on, Craig Busch has been good copy for the press – cute photos of newborn cubs, hands-on tours of his Zion Wildlife park – even a bit of self-promotion as the inspiration for Narnia’s Aslan.

But there’s another, less appealing side to the Lion Man.

He’s pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner, Karen Greybrook, and as she tells it, those assaults were terrifying.
